Ornate gold frames are a stunning way to bring character into your space and right on trend for the 2023 Transitional style decorators like me! I am always hunting for these frames at antique stores and thrift stores, but in my experience these chunky showstoppers have been difficult to come by.

Read on to see how I re-created this classic piece using a $2.50 thrifted frame and a few of my favorite tried and true DIY products.

Process:

I started by removing the back of the frame and the glass, then I wiped the frame down thoroughly with a damp cloth. After the frame was dry, I applied a small amount of Rub’n Buff in the color Antique Gold onto my finger and then applied it onto the frame. I then used a soft-bristle brush to buff the product in to all the grooves until the frame was coated completely.

Once the frame was dry, I quickly noticed that the Antique Gold color had a notable pink undertone that I wasn’t a fan of. I also noticed that the frame had no depth, and looked flat and dull.

One of the characteristics of authentic, old, ornate frames is dimension, which comes from aging over time. I needed to bring some of this aged charm to my frame.

To achieve this aged effect, I used Folkart Home Decor Wax in the color Antique Wax (linked below). I used a paint brush to apply a generous amount of the product into all the crevasses of the frame in order to enhance the detailing and add depth. I then used a dry paper towel to wipe away the excess product.

The result of this transformation is absolutely stunning! The frame is full of character and dimension and has a true, authentic old-world feel. It is difficult to even tell the difference between this DIY frame and some of my other authentic ornate frames!
